AIM OF THE PROJECT

‘Purnodaya Scholarship Fund’ aims to assist poor students from low-income families in Sri Lanka to achieve their formal education.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

a) To open doors for education by providing financial aid for the students from low-income families. We believe that the education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.

b) To break the cycle of poverty. Poverty and education are inextricably linked, because people living in poverty may stop sending their children to schools, which leaves them without literacy and numeracy skills they need to find a career in future.

 

OTHER BENEFITS

a) Purnodaya Scholarship Project also benefits families of the sponsored children. We as Catholic priests reach out warmly to these poor families, making them involved in their children's schooling and providing additional resources to alleviate their poor living condition.

b) Parents will be made aware of the importance of the education of their children.

c) We will be able to facilitate the parents with the new techniques that they can use to support their children's learning at home.

 

SELECTION OF THE CHILDREN

Children are selected from very poor families irrespective of sex, ethnicity and religion. Each child is to be screened by a committee to establish his/her real needs.

Our main focus is on;

• Parentless children
• Fatherless children
• Children who cannot afford the uniforms, stationary, food, transport cost to reach the school etc.
• Children coming from poor families of the rural areas of the country Recommendation of the applicants
• Applications for scholarships should be certified and recommended by either of the following persons; a catholic priest, catholic nun, a Buddhist monk, a principal, a government officer or a well recognized person.

 

GRANTING OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS

The selected children can be divided into two groups as the children who are receiving Primary education (From Grade 1 to 5 / Age 6 – 10 years old) and the children who are receiving Secondary education (from Grade 6 – 13 / Age 11 – 18 years old)

We suggest giving monthly Sri Lankan Rs. 1,500.00 to a child who is in primary level and Sri Lankan Rs. 2,000.00 for a student in secondary level.

HOW TO SPONSOR A POOR CHILD FOR EDUCATION

1. You can make a generous gift to the general fund,

Or

2. You can adopt a student. We can share with you the name, photo, and simple biography; you can follow up this particular child and continue your sponsorship in the following years if you wish.

 

HOW CAN YOU CONTRIBUTE?

You can handover cash donations directly to Mr. Amal Liyanage, who will collect all the cash donations and deposit to the ‘Purnodaya Scholarship Fund’.

Or

You can directly make a deposit to the bank account of ‘Purnodaya Scholarship Fund’.

FOLLOW UP METHOD

Following criteria are used to observe the proper usage of the scholarship money.

• Annual progress report of the child issued by the school
• Visiting families of the children at least once a year
• Calling them for an annual gathering

 

EVALUATION

Donors are allowed to evaluate this project through verification, photographs, activity report and statement of accounts or as requested.
